Save the Blue Heart of Europe

More than 3,000 hydropower dams and diversions are proposed or being built on wild rivers in the Balkans—with almost half in protected areas. These projects would permanently damage the last untamed rivers in Europe—impacting wildlife, displacing communities and destroying freshwater resources.

Save the Blue Heart of Europe

Tell International Banks to Stop Investing in the Destruction of Europe’s Last Wild Rivers

We must stop the decimation of the wild Balkan rivers by destructive hydropower dams and diversions. The world needs healthy rivers and lower impact energy options exist beyond hydropower. Activists living in communities along the Balkan rivers and European NGOs are fighting against the international banks that have poured millions of euros into destructive hydropower development in the region, when the movement to free our rivers and remove dams is growing worldwide.
